Laurier receives prestigious CCAE national award

Communications, Public Affairs & Marketing

Jun 5/14

Wilfrid Laurier University and its Development & Alumni Relations team have won a gold medal from the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education’s (CCAE) annual Prix d’Excellence awards program. The award was announced this week at the CCAE National Conference in Edmonton, Alberta.

Laurier won top honours in the Best Use of Social Media category for its ‘Like’ where in the Laurier world are you? contest.

The initiative was led by Communications Officer (Alumni) Jordan Jocius with support from Acting Associate Director, Annual Giving, Beth Noble.

The goal of the campaign was to use social media to find “lost” alumni for whom the university had no contact information. The focus was primarily on alumni living outside of Canada.

“With over 46,000 Laurier alumni using Facebook we hoped that we could use social networking service to update contact information and then share with these reconnected alumni the campus energy, alumni affairs and Laurier traditions,” explained Jocius.

Targeted Facebook ads to over 85 countries encouraged alumni to visit and to update their contact information. Those that submitted updates were entered into a draw for a $1,000 grand prize.

The campaign exceeded all goals:

•  Updated 550 Laurier alumni profiles which was a 220-per-cent increase over the goal of updating 250 lost alumni contacts.
•  Found 143 formerly lost Laurier alumni living outside of Canada which was a 143-per-cent increase over the goal of updating 100 lost alumni contacts.

•  Increased “Likes” on by 1,360, which was a 272-per-cent increase over the goal of 500 Likes. The most successful post had a Facebook reach of over 33,910 people.

“One of the priorities of our team in Development & Alumni Relations is to foster lifelong relationships with alumni,” said Vice-President Rob Donelson. “Maintaining accurate contact information is an ongoing challenge. Leveraging technology to connect with alumni helps us to manage costs and find new ways to engage this very important group.”

CCAE’s Prix d'Excellence is a national annual awards program which recognizes outstanding achievement in alumni affairs, public affairs, communications, marketing, development, advancement services, stewardship, student recruitment and overall institutional advancement.
