Waterloo Lutheran Seminary launches psychotherapy book April 4

Communications, Public Affairs & Marketing

Mar 25/14

The Wilfrid Laurier University community is invited to attend a book launch for Psychotherapy: Cure of the Soul, April 4 at 8:45 a.m. in the Keffer Chapel, Waterloo Lutheran Seminary (WLS).

Psychotherapy: Cure of the Soul is a multi-faith book about the contemporary practice of spiritually integrated psychotherapy.

“Cure of the Soul is an ancient term that goes back to Plato and was adopted by many of the major religious traditions, said WLS Professor Thomas St. James O’Connor. “It is the root of the word psychotherapy – “psycho” meaning soul and “therapy” meaning a cure – and it is the practice of helping people whose spirits are broken. Psychotherapy has been around for more than 2000 years, but since Freud adopted the term most people don’t think about the spiritual aspect anymore – we’re trying to reclaim that tradition in the book.”

The book was edited by O’Connor, Kristine Lund, WLS assistant principal and director of the Spiritual Care and Psychotherapy Programs, and Patricia Berendsen, president of the Society for Pastoral Counselling Research (SPCR) and WLS alumna.

The book was published by WLS with grants from SPCR, Laurier’s Office of Research Services and St. Joseph’s Hospital. A number of Laurier faculty members, alumni and students contributed to the book, which covers modern psychotherapy practices in a variety of fields and topics, such as music, social work, religion and coping, pagan practices, and addiction.

The launch will feature about eight short presentations from authors included in the book with a reception afterwards. The book will be available for purchase.
