Laurier faculty invited to panel about accessibility rights and responsibilities

Communications, Public Affairs & Marketing

Oct 11/13

Laurier faculty are invited to attend a panel, discussing their responsibilities in regards to providing academic accommodations to students with disabilities, as outlined by the Ontario Human Rights Code and Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). The panel, titled “Access to Education and Accommodation: Compliance and Beyond,” takes place Oct. 15, from 11 a.m. to noon in the Hawk’s Nest on Laurier’s Waterloo campus.

The session will cover frequently asked questions about accommodations, privacy, Accessible Learning Centre registration, suspected disabilities and best practices in accessible instructional design. Laurier staff and faculty will discuss how incorporating principles of Universal Design for Learning may help reduce the need for some individual accommodations and improve learning for all students.

The panel, moderated by Pat Rogers, associate vice-president: teaching and learning, includes:

  • Shereen Rowe, university secretary and general counsel
  • Gwen Page, director of the Accessible Learning Centre
  • Lynn Kane, employment equity and AODA officer
  • Jonathan Finn, associate professor and graduate director, Faculty of Arts
  • Leanne Hagarty, instructor, School of Business and Economics

For more information about the event, contact Lynn Kane at or ext. 4710.
