Academic Background
James Wong joined Wilfrid Laurier University in 1998 with the Department of Communication Studies. He has previously taught at the University of Toronto and Ryerson University in philosophy, and is now a member of the Department of Philosophy at Wilfrid Laurier University. Wong holds a doctorate in Philosophy (University of Toronto, 1994) as well as a M.Sc. in Chemistry (University of Toronto, 1980). In his youthful days, he worked in organic photochemistry. Now that he is much older and let's hope wiser, his research interests lie at the intersection between values and knowledge, with particular emphasis on autonomy in Foucault. Recent publications include a co-edited volume with Cheryl Hughes, Communication, Conflict and Resolution: Proceedings of the 17th International Conference on Social Philosophy (Philosophy Documentation Centre, 2003) and a volume of essays, co-edited with David Checkland, titled Teen Pregnancy and Parenting: Social and Ethical Issues (University of Toronto Press, 1999) as well as articles on social identities, epistemology, Foucault, and media ethics in The Southern Journal of Philosophy, Philosophia, Canadian Journal of Political Science, Journal for the Theory of Social Behaviour, Canadian Journal of Communication, and International Studies in the Philosophy of Science.
