BiographyGebre has been working with the Kitchener Downtown Community Health Centre a Health Promoter since graduating from the MSW program in 1999. Gebre works with different communities and organizations, developing programs and services which address health and social issues. Part of Gebreís work involves developing and coordinating programs and services, writing grant proposals, designing and delivering educational workshops and forums. Before coming to Canada, he taught for five years at Addis Ababa University (Ethiopia) in the Department of Sociology and Social Administration. Gebre teaches Program Development and Social Planning, as well as Diversity, Marginalization and Oppression in the Faculty of Social Work.
Gebre was the recipient of the Graduate Honour Award in 2005, the Social Innovation Research Groupís award in 2008 in honor of outstanding contribution to community development and Social Justice, and United Way of Kitchener-Waterloo and Areaís Community Spirit Award in 2010. Gebre is interested in the areas of diversity, equity, organizational change, civic participation, cultural competency, intercultural communication, migration (both economic and refugee) and its impact and mental health.
