Dr. Scott Nicholson has degrees in Information Science, Library Science, and Math and Computer Science. He was a professor at Syracuse University's School of Information Science from 2001-2015, where he was the director of the Masters of the Library and Information Science program. He also was a visiting professor at MIT's Gambit Game Lab during the 2011-2012 academic year.

Dr. Nicholson is a lifelong gamer and published tabletop game designer as the sole designer of Tulipmania 1637 and Going, Going, GONE! He also was the first person to do a video series about board game on YouTube, which ran from 2005-2010 and was called Board Games with Scott.
He is focused on developing games to change with world, with a focus on non-digital games, such as card games, board games, live action games, and escape rooms. He also enjoys helping others learn to make transformative games through community game jams. He also works on methods gamification that does not rely upon rewards like points and badges, which he calls meaningful gamification.
