My first experience with service-learning was participating in Mennonite Central Committee’s Serve and Learn Together (SALT) program. I travelled to Vancouver and was placed with a Homecare agency providing support services that helped people live independently in their homes. This experiential learning opportunity opened the door to reflecting about my part as a member of community, both in terms of citizenship and volunteering. It also informed my first career, working at the City of Kitchener (1991) in the Community Services Dept.
After 10 years with the City of Kitchener, I began working in the field of philanthropy. This led to my role at Laurier (2006) in the Development and Alumni Relations office. I was honoured during my time in Development to meet many donors who through their financial gifts have made a difference in the lives of many students.
In 2013, I joined the Community Service-Learning (CSL) team and now have the privilege of working with many community partners that are giving of their time and talents to help provide students with experiential learning opportunities. Part of my role includes overseeing the operational aspects for Laurier’s CSL programming at both the Waterloo & Brantford campus. I work closely with students, faculty and community partners in order to offer and expand CSL as a form of experiential learning at Laurier.
