An immigrant to Canada from Russia at age five, I began my English language learning journey as a shy kindergarten student in a Brantford elementary school. Years later, as a high school student, I was not only fluent in English but had grown to love languages, and left Assumption College School with a desire to continue learning about what I was most interested in. I enrolled in the English and Cultural Studies program at McMaster University, and spent the next few years studying literature, language and psychology, which led to a Bachelor of Arts degree. During my undergraduate years, I fell in love with and married my best friend, and together we travelled to South Korea to teach English for a year. This experience abroad awakened a passion for teaching, and upon returning to Canada, my husband and I earned our Bachelor of Education degrees at Brock University. We then immediately put our new teaching skills and knowledge to use as public school teachers in Taiwan. We’ve been able to continue working together as ESL Facilitators for the LEAF Program at Laurier Brantford. I love being able to guide my students in their language learning journeys, and hope my love of language is evident and contagious in my classroom.
