A native of Scarborough, Kevin O’Donnell studied at the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto, the Royal Conservatory of Music’s Orchestral Training Program, and the Banff Centre for the Arts (Opera Orchestra Residency).
Kevin’s principal teachers include Toronto Symphony flutists Virginia Markson and Nora Shulman, in addition to private and master class study with many of the worlds leading flutists including Geoffrey Gilbert, Peter Lloyd, Carol Wincenc, William Bennett, and Walfrid Kujala.
Active as an orchestral player, Kevin has successfully held the positions of Principal Flute with Symphony Nova Scotia, as well as Second Flute/Piccolo with the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, with whom he has an extensive recording and broadcast history.
Currently in demand as a Freelance Artist, he performs regularly with the National Ballet of Canada, and the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony while also being regularly called to perform with the Canadian Chamber Ensemble, Stratford Festival Orchestra, Orchestra London, and Opera Ontario. As a chosen festival player, he performs with the Elora Festival Orchestra and has also been a member of the Westben Festival Orchestra, and the Banff Festival Opera.
As a soloist, he has been featured with the Canadian Chamber Ensemble (broadcast on CBC Radio), the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony and the WLU Flute Ensemble, in addition to regular solo recitals as part of Wilfrid Laurier University’s Thursday Noon Series.
A dedicated teacher, Kevin has been member of Wilfrid Laurier University’s Faculty of Music since 1996, and is also a long standing Faculty Member at Inter-Provincial Music Camp. He has also enjoyed participating in the enrichment of young musicians through previous associations with the National Music Camp of Canada, as well as the music camps offered by the Scarborough, Peel, and York Region Boards of Education.
