Dr. Debra Langan received her B.A. in Psychology from Carleton University and M.A. in Sociology from the University of Windsor, with an emphasis on Social Psychology and Criminology.  Before completing her doctorate she worked for six years with the Correctional Services Division of the Solicitor General's Department, Alberta Provincial Government, first as a Probation Officer in Rocky Mountain House, and Red Deer, and on the Sunchild/O'Chiese and Big Horn reserves: and then as a Caseworker and Substance Abuse Educator in a minimum-security Correctional Centre in Edmonton.  She completed her Ph.D. in Sociology at York University where she focused on interpretive and postmodern theories and their application in qualitative analyses of issues related to violence against women. She also worked collaboratively on community-engaged participatory research and on the development and implementation of community protocols to improve criminal justice, medical, and social service responses to violence against women.

Dr. Langan joined the Department of Criminology at Laurier Brantford as an Assistant Professor in August 2009, following a ten year appointment as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at York University.  At York her research centered on families and intimate relations and the scholarship of teaching and learning, with critical social psychology, discourse analysis, and other qualitative methods as the guiding theoretical and methodological orientations.  At Laurier Brantford, Dr. Langan has been teaching in the areas of advanced criminological theory; policing; qualitative methodologies; research and professionalization; women, law and crime; and youth justice. Her research trajectories at Laurier have been focused primarily in the areas of gendered violence (verbal violence and rape culture) and policing.

Dr. Langan is an award-winning professor, her accomplishments including the University-Wide Teaching Award for Full Time Faculty, awarded by the Senate Committee on Teaching and Learning, York University (2008). Dr. Langan and her husband Paul reside in Cambridge and have two children in university, Dylan (21) and Katie (19).
