Scott Hayter joined Wilfrid Laurier University in 2004 as Assistant Vice President: University Development and was appointed Vice President: University Advancement in 2007. Previously, he was director of corporate development and communications at the University of Durham in the United Kingdom.
A graduate of Canada’s Royal Military College, Hayter served in the military from 1976 until 1988, when he joined the private sector as deputy head of a boys’ boarding school in Niagara, Canada. Here he was responsible, among other things, for fund raising and alumni affairs. In 1995, he launched his fund raising career in higher education as the assistant director of external relations at Brock University, Niagara, Canada.
In 1997, Hayter and his family emigrated to England, where he became director of development at the University of Durham, and laid the groundwork for a £175 million campaign to mark the university’s 175th anniversary in 2007.
During his seven years at Durham, Hayter gained experience in international fund raising, contributing to the continued development of the profession in the UK and the wider European region. A highlight was his involvement in planning and conducting the CASE Europe Spring Institute in Educational Fund Raising (SIEFR) from its inception in 2002, culminating in the position of chair of SIEFR in 2004. Hayter is a member of the CASE SIEFR faculty in Dartmouth and the CASE Philanthropy Commission.
