Thesis Entitled: Controls on Terrestrial Evapotranspiration from a Forest-Wetland Complex in the Western Boreal Plain, Alberta, Canada.
Scott Brown is the technical lead for the Boreal Ecohydrology Research Group (BERG) at Wilfrid Laurier University based out of the Cold Regions Research Centre (CRRC). Scott oversees the data management, technicial requirements, instrumentation, laboratory work, logistics and graduate student training for a variety of ecohydrological research projects focused in the Western Boreal Plains region of North Central Alberta. The Suncor Pilot Fen Project, in conjunction with the University of Waterloo (Price), University of Calgary (Strack) and Colorado State University (Cooper) is the largest NSERC-CRD grant awarded ever and is designed to be a self-contained (requiring no managed water supply) wetland system on reclaimed lands of the Suncor lease, Fort McMurray, Alberta. This constructed system along with a variety of representative reference fen systems within the Fort McMurray region are being monitored via hydrological and micrometeorological systems aimed at assessing the success of the initial design of the system.
Scott also oversees BERG's contribution to the continuation of the Hydrology, Ecology and Disturbance (HEAD-2) program in conjunction with the University of Alberta (Devito), McMaster University (Waddington) and the University of Guelph (Turetsky), which focuses on the eco-hydrological and hydrogeological controls on the vulnerability and resilience of peatlands to fire in the Western Boreal Plain, North Central Alberta.
BERG also has significant research projects focused on the oil sands reclamation in Fort McMurray and surrounding regions funded through the Cumulative Environmental Management Association (CEMA) with a focus on water, energy and carbon cycling and its implications for recovery trajectories for oil sand reclamation and disturbed watersheds in the Western Boreal Forest. This research in conducted in conjunction with the McMaster University (Carey) and seeks to analyze the intercomparisons of water, energy, carbon and water use efficiency across a variety of disturbance impacted landscapes of north central Alberta.
