Empowering Gamers to Make a Difference:
Community Engagement through the Game Designers' Guild

Presenter: Scott Nicholson, Director, Because Play Matters game lab and associate professor, Syracuse University School of Information Studies

Over the last year, the Game Designers’ Guild of Syracuse has developed games and play-based experiences for libraries, museums, and other places of informal learning. Dr. Scott Nicholson started this group as a way to encourage
local gamers to learn about game design through projects that are making a difference in the local community. During this talk, Dr. Nicholson will talk about the structure of the Game Designers' Guild, the projects they have done over the last year, and how this model could be replicated in other communities.

Dr. Scott Nicholson is the Director of the Because Play Matters game lab and an Associate Professor at the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University. His areas of interest include meaningful gamification and the creation of transformative games for informal learning and training. During the 2011-2012 academic year, he was a visiting professor at MIT in Comparative Media Studies and the GAMBIT game lab. Dr. Nicholson is the author of Everyone Plays at the Library, is the designer of the published board games Going, Going, Gone! and Tulipmania 1637, and was the host of the web series Board Games with Scott.
