In order to understand the legacy of the extermination of communists in modern Indonesia, filmmaker Joshua Oppenheimer has recourse to a highly original strategy:
To make a film of the anti-communist purges of 1965-66 starring, written by and directed by the perpetrators of the crimes
The result is The Act of Killing (2012), a film by turns fascinating, terrifying and revolting.
Milo Sweedler will explore the dynamic relationship between truth and fiction in Oppenheimer's strange and powerful film
