This presentation examines the challenges of working as a freelance journalist in volatile media industries. Based on a national survey of 200 Canadian freelance journalists and interviews with journalists’ organizations, the presentation reviews the changing nature of journalistic production and highlights the implications for the growing yet increasingly precarious media workforce.

Students, faculty, and staff are welcome to attend.

Nicole S. Cohen holds a PhD in Communication and Culture from York University. She researches in the area of political economy of communication, particularly labour and organizing in the media and cultural industries. She is a research assistant with the Digital Labour group at the University of Western Ontario and the co-founder of Shameless magazine. Website:
