"Something That You Are" (Short Play) - Dramatic Reading
Date: Oct 16/13
Location: DAWB 2-104
"Something That You Are," a play about the experiences of being a person of mixed-race origins in multicultural Canada will be performed by Filipino Canadian actors, Vanessa Trenton and Andrea Mapili.
Written by Trenton, the short, powerful play depicts the lives of two twenty-something-year-old sisters. It will be read on October 16, 2013 at 2:30 pm in DAWB 2-104 as part of Dr. Eleanor Ty's EN 165 Enriched Literary Studies class. Students and faculty are welcome to watch the dramatic reading and stay for the question period (approx. 2:30-3:00 pm).
Dr. Ty comments, "I saw the play at the 'Flipside Festival' of Carlos Bulosan Theatre in 2010 in Toronto, and was very impressed by the performances of Trenton and Mapili. With minimal props and within a short time, they were able to create strong, vivid characters who revealed their different experiences of growing up."
Vanessa Trenton is a graduate of Dalhousie University where she majored in Theatre and Gender & Women’s Studies. As a past workshop actor for Nightwood Theatre’s Write From The Hip program and a playwright in Carlos Bulosan Theatre’s Play Creation Unit, Vanessa greatly enjoys new play development. She is currently the administrative intern for fu-GEN Asian Canadian Theatre Company.
Andrea is an actor and playwright who recently graduated from the Tamalpa Institute's teacher training program specializing in movement-based expressive arts education and therapy. Her theatre credits include The Corner (JSquared), Tales From the Flipside (Carlos Bulosan Theatre), Flipside Keeps Current (Carlos Bulosan Theatre/CrossCurrents Festival), Baggage (Pulang Maleta Collective/Toronto Fringe Festival), Table for Six (4 x 4 Festival/Nightwood Theatre). Andrea is currently working on a theatre for young audiences play, called Through the Bamboo, with Byron Abalos.
