ABSTRACT: The proposal of sharia tribunals has initiated a debate centred on principles of alternative dispute resolution, family law and modifications to the Ontario Arbitration Act, 1991. In the December 2004 report, Protecting Choice Promoting Inclusion, Marion Boyd, former attorney general of Ontario, recommends sweeping change and standardization of mediation and arbitration practice. Although many of the recommendations relate to family and estate law, they have obvious implications for arbitration practice as a whole.
