Admission Requirements for Part-time Students

The normal requirement for admission to Ontario universities is completion of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with six Ontario Academic Credits (OACs), or the completion of the Grade 12 U and/or Grade 12 M level courses, provided the courses meet the program prerequisite requirements.

Adult Students

Wilfrid Laurier University does not have a policy for mature students. Please refer to this section on adult students.
You are an adult student if:
• You do not possess the necessary minimum requirements for admission to the university and
• You have not attended any post-secondary institutions
 1. You may be considered for admission as an adult student if:
• You have graduated from high school without at least 6 OAC and/or 12 U and/or 12 M courses (or equivalent) and have two or more years' work experience prior to the first day of classes; or
• You are at least 21 years old and have two or more years' work experience prior to the first day of classes.
The university will admit only those applicants who, in the opinion of the Admissions Committee, are adequately prepared to undertake university courses on the basis of previous academic training and/or life-skill experience.
2. In support of your application, you must also submit a personal assessment letter outlining:
• why you expect to be successful at university
• your current career ambitions
• your work experience since you last attended school.
You are encouraged to provide examples of employment experiences, leisure activities or volunteer work that show good citizenship and leadership qualities. An interview with an admissions officer may also be required. The Offer of Admission will outline clearly the conditions of academic probation and what you must do to qualify as a regular part-time student.

Students with Previous Post-secondary Education

If you have attended another university or a college in the past, we must take your academic standing into consideration. However, we will also consider the length of time you have been away from your previous studies. Official transcripts are required from all post-secondary institutions and we will assess automatically any applicable transfer credit when making our admission decision. Please see the section below on Transfer Credit Policies.

Re-admission to the University

If you were required to withdraw from Laurier or another post-secondary institution, you may apply for re-admission to begin studies no earlier than 12 months from the date of required withdrawal. Your request will be reviewed by the appropriate Admissions Committee. Along with appropriate academic documents, you must provide the Admissions Office with a letter you have written outlining the following:
A.  The program you wish to enter (or re-enter);
B. The reasons for your previous academic performance;
C.  Why you wish to attend Laurier and why you think you will be more successful academically at this time; and
D. Details concerning your activities or work experience since your last attendance at school.
Note: Evidence of successful upgrading is normally required.

Transfer Credit From Other Post-secondary Institutions

Once we receive your application form and official transcripts, we will review your file and mail our admission decision to you. If you are eligible for transfer credit, an assessment of your advanced standing will appear on your Offer of Admission. On occasion, an early conditional Offer of Admission is made pending receipt of final transcripts. In this case, the transfer credit assessment will be delayed until the official final documents are received. You will be sent a written confirmation of the credits granted when these documents have arrived. It is your responsibility to be aware of the implications of registering in courses without transfer credit assessment completed.
The university is committed to granting appropriate transfer credit to the maximum extent possible. Factors that affect transfer credit include: the type of institution you attended, the applicability of the courses to the program you wish to enter, your grades and the minimum Laurier course requirements as outlined in the Undergraduate Calendar section entitled Residence Requirements. You may be asked to provide course descriptions from the institution you attended.

Transfer Credit Policies

A. Fully accredited universities: subject to the guidelines noted above, a credit-for-credit transfer will be allowed wherever possible. If an equivalent course is not available at Laurier, we will attempt to award an unspecified elective credit.
B. Colleges of applied arts and technology (CAATs) or equivalent – two-year or three-year diploma programs: may be granted up to 5.0 transfer credits (usually unspecified elective credits, subject to the factors noted above).
