The Writing Centre provides free writing instruction for all undergraduate and graduate students. The purpose of the centre is to promote, support, and enhance academic writing in the university.
The Writing Centre offers individual writing consultations, drop-in hours, writing workshops, and in-class workshops or presentations arranged at the request of instructors. There is also an active writing research program.
Students may book individual 50-minute consultations at the Writing Centre and bring papers in progress for constructive feedback. Tutors assess the major strengths and weaknesses of the paper and discuss revision strategies to enhance students’ understanding of the essential requirements of academic writing such as focus, analytical structure, argument, and paragraph development. Sentence-level writing problems are also addressed to teach students how to communicate their thoughts clearly and precisely in agreement with the conventions of written English. Drop-in hours are for shorter, specific questions about writing and are typically 15 minutes in length.
The goal of the Writing Centre is to teach students how to engage in the tasks of academic writing and how to revise and edit papers in agreement with expected standards. Students are encouraged to conceive of writing as part of the learning process and to commit themselves actively to the long-term goal of writing expertise across multiple contexts. Both students who are proficient in English and English Language Learners are encouraged to participate in our language and writing programs.
Writing workshops are available on various topics and are free to all students, with the new schedule posted every fall. In-class workshops are designed to suit the specific needs of a particular course or discipline are developed in collaboration with instructors, in some cases ending up becoming part of a course.
The Writing Centre has many resources available on all aspects of academic writing, both in our library and online through our website, which also provides links to major academic writing sites in North America. Staff are available to help with all writing and language needs.
