This course will examine current understandings of “best practice” in assessment and evaluation as informed by recent research and theory. Students will build an initial repertoire of assessment methods, tolls, practices and procedures that are “ethical, fair, useful, feasible, and accurate” (JCSEE, 2003, p. 3). Central to the course is in-depth consideration of the role of assessment as a lever for improving teaching and learning, and as a result, student achievement. The role of large-scale assessments will also be considered.
